Dukes Lose Doubleheader at Richmond

Richmond, Va. - Duquesne University's baseball team lost a doubleheader to Richmond Sunday at the Spiders' Pitt Field. In the opener, UR came back from a 5-2 Duquesne lead and staved off a late rally by the Red and Blue for an 11-8 win in the opener.

In the nightcap, UR's Ian Mitchell pitched a three-hit complete game for the 7-0 over victory over the Dukes.

Mike Carroll, who picked up one of the Dukes' three hits in the second game, was three-for-five in the first contest with two RBI and three runs scored. The redshirt freshman went 6-of-14 in the three-game series (.429).

In game one, Duquesne scored two in the second to tie the game, 2-2, and added three more in the third for a 5-2 lead. UR answered with single runs in the third and fourth that tightened the score to 5-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff homer tied the game, 5-5. Duquesne's Scott Chisholm (0-7) got the next two batters before Richmond's two home runs, including a grand slam, gave the hosts a 10-5 lead.

The Dukes responded with two in the sixth that cut the margin to 10-7. The teams exchanged runs in the last three frames for the final score of 11-8. With the 7-0 win in game two, Richmond is now 16-24, 7-8 in Altantic 10 play. Senior Adam Haun (1-6) picked up the loss in the series finale.

The Dukes (9-29, 4-11 A-10) hit the road again for a non-conference contest at Ohio U. (13-19) in Athens, Ohio on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at 6:00 p.m.
