Box Score
Richmond, Va. - Duquesne University's baseball team overcame a 10-3 deficit and topped the Richmond Spiders, Friday at Pitt Field. Duquesne scored eight runs in the final two frames for their first lead of the game and the winning score of 15-14. Four homers accounted for seven of Duquesne's runs.
The Spiders jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and extended it to 8-0 in the second before a Duquesne player crossed the plate. DU did so in their next at-bat. Junior Pat Kimutis homered to start the third. Fellow junior Corey Bugno and sophomore Aaron Janusey each had RBI singles that cut the deficit to 8-3.
Richnond answered with two in the bottom of the third to go up 10-3. After a 10-minute rain delay, sophomore Nolan Pena's RBI double and Bugno's two-run single closed the margin to 10-6.
Two runs in the bottom of the fifth extended Richmond's lead to 12-6. Freshman Mike Carroll's home run made it 12-7 in the seventh. The Spiders answered again with two in the bottom of the frame for a 14-7 lead.
The Dukes put up three in the eighth and five in the ninth to go ahead for the first time, 15-14.
Janusey and sophomore Derek Mechling singles drove in one run each followed by soph Eric Morrison's bases-loaded walk that cut the score to 14-10 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
Richmond went down 1-2-3 setting up the opportunity for some Duquesne heroics. Five runs in DU's last at-bat, via Janusey's two-RBI home run and Morrison's three-run homer, gave the Red and Blue that one-run lead.
Senior Bob Hartle (1-2) stranded a runner on third in the ninth to preserve the Dukes' victory. Hartle, who gave up three earned runs and pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, picked up his first win this season. Jason Bolinski (2-6) gave up five runs, all unearned, and was charged with the loss.
Duquesne (9-27, 4-9 Atlantic 10) and Richmond (14-24, 5-8 A-10) resume the three-game series tomorrow, Sat. April 22nd, at 1 p.m. on Pitt Field. Senior Scott Chisholm is slated to start versus UR's Alex Hale.
