The Terps took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four, highlighted by Mike Murphy's double, for a 6-4 edge.
The Dukes added three in the top of the sixth to regain a 7-6 lead on Carroll's second home run of the day, a fielder's choice and Bernardo's single.
Maryland answered back with two in the bottom of the frame on a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball, to go ahead, 8-7.
In their next at-bat, Duquesne put five on the board via Carroll's single, sophomore Dante Plassio's double and Bernardo's two-out bases-clearing double.
Maryland duplicated that effort with five in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead, 13-12.
The Dukes managed only a walk in their next two at-bats against relief pitchers Ryan Moorer (1-0) and Brett Cecil. Junior Travis Rife (0-2), who gave up one run in 1 2/3 innings, was charged with the loss.
