DU Tops Bonnies, 8-7 in A-10 Opener

Duquesne's baseball team opened Atlantic 10 play with an 8-7 triumph over visiting St. Bonaventure in the Dukes' home-opener. The Red and Blue used two big innings to secure the win, scoring five runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth.

Sophomore Pat Kimutis had the game-winning hit in the sixth, blasting a three-run homer to give the Dukes the lead for good. Redshirt sophomore Derek Mechling also went deep, smashing his team-leading fourth round-tripper in the fourth. Fellow sophomore Nolan Pena added a 2-4 showing at the plate with runs scored and two knocked in.

Sophomore Nick Jones collected his first win of the season, pitching two relief innings while senior Adam Haun pitched the final two innings to notch his first save of the 2006 campaign.

Game two of the three-game series will be played tomorrow, Saturday, March 25 at 1:00 pm at Duquesne Field.
