Bethesda, Md. - Duquesne University's baseball team rebounded from Saturday's pair of one-run losses by pounding Georgetown, 18-4, in the series getaway game Sunday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. The Dukes put together 25 hits and had seven walks for their third win of the season.
Sophomore Aaron Janusey continued his hot batting as he was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. He had a pair of doubles, his second and third of this three-game series with the Hoyas. This weekend, the Western, Pa. native batted .692 (9-13), drove in eight runs and scored four runs.
Junior Jeff Naughton pitched a scoreless, one-hit five innings for his first win as a Duquesne player. When he gave way in the sixth, the Dukes were up 11-0. The Hoyas scored four runs, two earned, in the sixth and seventh, but were kept from the plate the rest of the way.
The Hoyas' Grady McConnell got three straight outs to start the game, but that would be the only inning the Red and Blue didn't score. DU scored at least two runs in each of the next eight frames, getting three runs in the fourth and seventh.
Senior Steve Maiolo was 4-for-6 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomores Eric Morrison and Dante Plassio each went 3-for-6. with Morrison scoring three runs and Plassio driving in four.
Freshman Anthony Manley was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored and classmate Mike Carroll hit his first home run of the season as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Manley went 6-for-7 (.857) this weekend with 4 RBI and three runs scored.
Sophomore Nolan Pena was 2-for-2 with two RBI and classmate Derek Mechling was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI.
Derek deGrijs was the lone Hoya with more than one hit -- he was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Matthew Bouchard had two RBI. McConnell (0-3) was charged with the loss.
The Dukes next game is Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at Akron with a 2:00 p.m. start. Duquesne returns to the 'Burgh the next day when they head to the Pittsburgh Panthers' field to make up last Wednesday's game that was postponed because of the poor field conditions.
