Dukes Lose 1-Run Games at Georgetown

Bethesda, Md. - Duquesne University's baseball team dropped a pair of games by identical 7-6 scores to Georgetown Saturday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. In both games, the Dukes rally in their last at-bat but fell short.

Sophomore Aaron Janusey led Duquesne's attack going 5-for-8 with five RBI and two runs scored. Senior Steve Maiolo was 4-for-8 with two RBI and a run scored and freshman Anthony Manley was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.

In game one, Duquesne opened with a couple runs in the top of the first. Sophomore Derek Mechling's sacrifice fly drove in classmate Pat Kimutis, who had reached base on a throwing error. January's single plated Eric Morrison, another soph., for DU's other score of the frame.

The Hoyas were silent until the third when they put four runs on the board, highlighted by Ryan Craft's two-run double.

Manley's single in the top of the fourth scored Janusey to tighten the score to 4-3.

In the bottom of the fouth, Matthew Maranges homered. The Hoyas added two more in their next at-bat to extend the lead to 7-3.

Duquesne responded in the sixth to tighten the margin to 7-5. Janusey drove in Maiolo, who had doubled to open the inning. Then Janusey scored on junior Joe Berletic's fielder's choice.

The Dukes rallied in the final, seventh, inning of the first game. Maiolo's one-out single scored Kimutis. The attack ended when Maiolo was thrown out attempting to get into scoring position.

Senior Adam Haun (1-3) was charged with the loss. Junior Alex Sharick pitched a scoreless final 1 2/3 innings.

In the nightcap, Georgetown scored twice in both the second and third innings before DU sophomore Dante Plassio scored in the fourth on an Hoya throwing error.

Duquesne knotted the game, 4-4, in their next at-bat. on Janusey's 3-RBI double that scored Maiolo, Morrison and Kimutis.

A pair of runs in the fifth and a single score in the sixth put Georgetown up 7-4. Once again, the Dukes rallied in their final at-bat. Mechling scored on Manley's one-out single and Sharick's bases-loaded walk drove in Janusey. Two ground outs ended Duquesne's attack for the second straight one-run, 7-6 defeat.

Senior Scott Chisholm (0-2) picked up the loss. Sophomore Joe Kaye allowed one run in three innings of relief.

The Dukes (2-11) and Hoyas (9-11) conclude their three-game weekend series Sunday, March 19 at noon at Povich Field.
