Bradenton, Fla. - Duquesne University's baseball team, which had an exhibition match with a Pittsburgh Pirates squad on Thursday, was dropped by Connecticut, 11-1, Friday afternoon in the sixth game of their Spring Break in the Sunshine State.
The Dukes took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second only to see the Huskies (6-5) respond with three runs in the bottom of that frame on the way to the 10-run victory.
Senior Steve Maiolo (Pittsburgh, PA / Mt. Lebanon) opened the inning with a single, stole second and was driven in by sophomore Aaron Janusey's (Venetia, PA / Peters Township) single. UConn tallied three markers in their turn via three singles, two walks and a sacrifice fly.
The Huskies added three in the fifth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth to give Ben Sirois (2-1) the win. Sirois and two other hurlers held Duquesne to five hits.
Senior Adam Haun (Polk, PA / Franklin) went 4 1/3 innings and sophomore Joe Kaye (Pittsburgh, PA / Penn Hills) pitched the rest of the way for the Dukes (1-8). Haun (1-2) was charged with the loss.
Saturday, March 11th, the Dukes will take on Central Michigan (5-6) starting at 10 a.m. in the penultimate game of this trip.
