Philadelphia, Pa. - Duquesne University's men's soccer team scored twice in the first 25 minutes and held off the Owls the rest of the way for a 2-0 shutout over Temple Friday afternoon at the Ambler Sports Complex in suburban Philadelphia. The win, the Dukes' fifth straight, increases their season record to 10-4-1, 5-1-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
The start of the game was delayed for 45 minutes because of heavy rain and strong winds.
The Dukes opened the scoring when junior Travis MacKenzie took a pass from freshman Alex Trujillo and found senior Tom Sochacki deep in the Temple zone. Sochacki, a member of College Soccer News' Team of the Week, weaved through the Owl defense and pushed the ball past a challenging Bryant Hosler to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead 13 minutes in.
The Owls had a chance to respond minutes later when J.T. Noone sent a cross to Eddie Romero, who had his shot blocked by DU senior goalie Zach Varga.
Duquesne extended their lead to 2-0 in the 24th minute when sophomore Pat Flinn's header off a corner kick from junior Greg Annan found the back of the net.
Temple goalkeeper Tony Pratico, who relieved Hosler in the first half, was able to keep the Owls within striking distance but the offense couldn't cut into the Duquesne lead.
Varga frustrated the Owls all afternoon, turning away five shots. This was his fifth shutout of the season and 28th in his four-year career with the Red and Blue.
Temple recorded ten shots for the game to three for the Dukes. The Owls are 1-4-0 in the A-10, 2-11-1 overall.
The Dukes will remain in Philadelphia and will take on Saint Joseph's (1-10-3, 0-4-1 A-10) at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 22, 2006. The Hawks hosted St. Bonaventure Friday evening.
