The Duquesne University men's soccer team held on to defeat visiting Xavier, 3-2 in overtime in a crucial Atlantic 10 match-up Sunday afternoon on Rooney Field.
The Dukes jumped out to a 2-0 lead as junior Greg Annan and senior Tom Sochacki scored in the 17th and 30th minutes.
Xavier responded however in the 36th minute as Matt Kmetz scored on a penalty kick to cut the DU lead in half.
Kmetz was awarded the penalty shot after Duquesne's Bryan Matthews was called for an intenional hand ball in the box preventing a Xavier goal. Thus, the Dukes played the rest of the contest with just 10 players.
Xavier turned up the heat in the second half, outshooting the Dukes 12-6 in the period and scoring with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to send the match into overtime.
The Red and Blue acted quickly in the extra frame as Sochacki found the net for the second time on the day less than three minutes into OT off an assist from fellow senior Noah Salsi to give the Dukes the victory.
Salsi had two assists on the day as did junior Travis MacKenzie.
The Dukes hit the road for their final four regular season contests, beginning on Friday, Oct. 20 as they travel to Temple for a 3:00 pm match.
