Dukes Blank Vikings, 3-0

Sept. 22, 2005

Box Score

The Duquesne University men's soccer team improved to 5-1 with a 3-0 blanking of visiting Cleveland State Thursday evening on Rooney Field.

Senior Scott Gibson lit the scoreboard first just minutes after entering the contest as he was dragged down from behind in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Gibson beat the keeper to the lower part of the net and gave the Red and Blue a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute.

Gibson struck again just 54 seconds before the intermission on a feed from junior Jared Helfrich to give DU a 2-0 advantage at the break. Fellow senior Steve Mellor put the game out of reach early in the second stanza on an assist from sophomore Greg Annan as the Dukes cruised comfortably to the victory.

Twenty-one different Dukes saw playing time as the Red and Blue outshot the Green and White, 25-5.

The regionally ranked Dukes (third in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic region) return to action on Sunday, Sept. 25 as they travel to the west coast to face San Diego State (fifth in the Far West region) at 4:00 pm est.
