The Duquesne University men's soccer team scored two goals in the first 16 minutes of action and cruised to a 2-0 blanking of visiting St. Bonaventure Friday evening in the season opener at Rooney Field.
Sophomore Travis MacKenzie scored the game-winner in the 11th minute on a header which was assisted by senior Steve Mellor. Mellor found the back of the net himself less than five minutes later off an assist from junior transfer (James Madison) Tom Sochacki.
The Dukes outshot the Bonnies 17-8 in the contest and were led by Mellor's six shots and MacKenzie's five.
Junior keeper Zach Varga made three saves in goal to tally his 14th career shutout.
The Red and Blue return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 as they face Binghamton at noon in the first round of the St. Bonaventure Classic.
