Dayton, Ohio - Duquesne University's men's soccer team shut out Cal Poly, 2-0, Friday in the first round of Dayton's Marriott Flyer Classic on UD's Baujan Field. The win raises the #5 Dukes' record to 3-1-0. (Ranking - National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) / adidas Middle Atlantic Region)
Senior Andrew Bell (New Marske, Redcar (England) / Huntcliff Secondary) and junior Jared Helfrich (Pittsburgh, PA / North Hills) each scored goals while junior Zach Varga (Mountville, PA / Hempfield) had one save as he recorded his 15th career shutout.
Duquesne dominated the game with six shots on goal to the Mustangs' single. Cal Poly's Jeremy Coupe recorded four saves.
Bell opened the scoring in the 30th minute when he got the ball from a scrum in front of the goal and netted a 12 footer. Junior Noah Salsie (North Huntingdon, PA / Norwin) and sophomore Travis MacKenzie (Carnegie, PA / Chartiers Valley) assisted on the score.
The insurance point was added in the 65th minute when Helfrich tallied off a restart, 19 feet from the goal line.
Dayton (2-2-3) beat Marshall, 2-0, in tonight's second game.
Duquesne and Marshall (2-3-0) meet at 12 noon Sunday, September 18th. Cal Poly (2-3-0) will face the host Flyers in the day's second game at 2:30 p.m.
