St. Bonaventure, N.Y. - Duquesne University's men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season as nationally ranked Binghamton won 1-0 Saturday afternoon at the St. Bonaventure Invitational.
Brazilian-native Danilo scored the only point of the game at 60:06 from 15 yards out. BU's goalie, Ryan Bertoni, saved a career-high seven shots that the Dukes put on the mark. Six of those attempts were in the second half as DU pressured Binghamton's defense in the final half hour but was unable to get the ball past Bertoni.
Steve Mellor and Derek Freund each had two shots on goal. Zach Varga had five saves for Duquesne.
Binghamton (2-0-1) was ranked #20 nationally in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll and are second in the New York Region. The Dukes (1-1-0) opened the season third in NSCAA's Mid-Atlantic region.
In the other match Saturday afternoon, St. Bonaventure (1-1-1) blanked Western Michigan, 2-0.
Duquesne meets Western Michigan (0-3) in both teams' second game of the tournament on Sunday at 12:00 noon. The Bearcats and the Bonnies meet at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
