Huntington, W. Va. - Duquesne's women soccer team was finally able to get on the field Sunday afternoon, capturing a 5-2 victory in the season opener over Jacksonvile at Marshall University's Thundering Herd Nike Classic Tournament at Sam Hood Field.. Sophomore Audra Mathews (Cincinnati, Ohio / Saint Ursula Academy), DU's leading scorer last season, led the Dukes to the win with two goals and two assists.
Junior Virginia Bondi (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) had five saves in the victory. Freshman Shannon Rengers (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and redshirt junior Martine Gilbert (Wilmington, N.C. / J.T. Hoggard) both had two points with a goal and an assist each.
The opening round of the Classic, when DU was scheduled to face host Marshall, was cancelled after two days of rain on Friday and Saturday.
Duquesne (1-0) grabbed a 2-0 halftime lead after Rengers hit the back of the net off Erica Carey's (Wilmington, N.C. / J.T. Hoggard) far corner kick 11:53 into the match. Rengers fed Mathews for the first half's final score with 31.36 on the clock.
The Dolphins (0-1) fought back early in the second half to tie the game at 2-2, both markers in the first 6 1/2 minutes on Michelle Lavine and Jenny Borschel shots. Keri Zwikker assisted on both scores.
The Dukes responded with three unanswered goals started by Mathews' second off an assist from Gilbert at 53.12 who then got her first goal of the season at 62.43, heading in a deflection of a Mathews' shot. Mathews set up sophomore Kelly Reed (South Park, Pa. / South Park) for a close-in shot for the game's last tally with less than 15 minutes to go.
Jacksonville came close to narrowing the margin with less than two minutes left when Zwikker's shot caroomed off the crossbar.
In the other game of the tournament, the University of Pittsburgh scored 18 minutes into play and held off host Marchall for a 1-0 win.
The Dukes return to the road next weekend when they will face Niagara on Saturday, September 3rd at 1:00 p.m.
