Dayton, Ohio - Duquesne University's baseball team came back with a fury in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader with a 10-5 victory over Dayton at UD's newly dedicated Time Warner Cable Stadium. The win put the Dukes over .500 in league play (9-8); UD is now 10-7 in the conference.
Sophomore Alex Sharick paced the Dukes with four RBI and freshmen Aaron Janusey and Bill Torre each had three hits as the Red and Blue's offense spanked out 15 hits against two Dayton pitchers. Senior Bob Reifschneider (3-5) pitched a complete game for the win.
Dayton kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first via a ground-out RBI by Brandon Godzik. Duquesne, which went down 1-2-3 in the first, changed the momentum scoring two runs in their next at-bat. The offense was highlighted by doubles by junior Steve Maiolo and Torre as Duquesne got their first lead in the twin-bill, 2-1.
The Flyers still had some kick. Galen Schumm's three-run homer in the bottom of the frame enabled the host to regain the lead, 4-2. But the Dukes also had an answer.
Sophomore Joe Berletic opened the third with a double, scoring on senior Mike Grecco's single who later found home plate on Janusey's single to knot the game, 4-4.
Duquesne put four hits together in the fifth for an 8-4 lead, which turned out to be all the scoring necessary for the W.
Freshman Eric Morrison opened the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on Grecco's sacrifice and scored on Maiolo's single giving the Dukes their second lead of the game, 5-4. The big hit was Sharick's three-run double that plated Torre, Janusey and Maiolo.
Bryan Chandler's lead-off home run in the sixth narrowed the margin to 8-5.
Duquesne wasn't in the mood to let the Flyers back into this game. anusey's lead off double, Torre and junior Mike Duganich singles and a UD throwing error put two more runs on the plate which generated the final score of 10-5.
The Dukes (14-28 overall) and the Flyers (25-19) complete the three-game series on Sunday, May 8th at 12:00 noon at UD's Time Warner Cable Stadium.
