The Duquesne University baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning and a 5-0 advantage after two and a half frames, but could not hold on as Dayton defeated the Dukes, 8-5, at UD's Fifth Third Field in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Junior Steve Maiolo was 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored while freshman Eric Morrison and senior Mike Grecco each had two hits.
Duquesne jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on five hits off UD starter Craig Stammen. The outburst was highlighted by Maiolo's RBI single and Morrison's RBI double. The Dukes (20-33) held a 5-0 advantage after two innings before the Flyers manufactured a run in the third off senior starter Bob Reifschneider (3-7). Hepner's three-run blast over the left field wall in the fourth pulled UD to within one, 5-4.
Dayton (35-21) knotted the score at 5-5 in the fifth on Joe McSoley's RBI single. UD went ahead for good with a three runs in the seventh on four hits, including back-to-back RBI hits by Bryan Chandler and McSoley. Stammen then closed the door with a perfect ninth inning to earn his ninth win of the season.
The Red and Blue return to the diamond at 7:00 pm this evening as they face the loser of the 3:30 pm game between third-seeded Fordham and sixth-seeded Richmond.
Update: No. 6 Richmond upset the Rams, 4-1, in 13 innings.
