May 16, 2005

Box Score

The Duquesne University baseball team dropped its magic number to one by defeating visiting Richmond, 8-7 Monday at Duquesne Field. The Dukes need just one more conference win or one conference loss by La Salle to qualify for their third straight Atlantic 10 Championship appearance.

The Red and Blue scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-2 lead over Richmond before the Spiders scored three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to tie the game at 7-7. In the bottom of the ninth however, freshman Dante Plassio singled, freshman Nolan Pena sacrificed Plassio to second and Richmond intentionally walked senior Mike Grecco before Duquesne's leading hitter, junior Steve Maiolo singled in the winning run.

The Dukes' magic number is now one, meaning they need just one more conference win or one conference loss by La Salle to qualify for their third straight Atlantic 10 Championship appearance. The Red and Blue will travel to Pitt on Tuesday, May 17 for a 7:00 pm contest before hosting Saint Joseph's in a three-game series at the end of the week.
