Akron, Ohio - Duquesne University's baseball team was shut out by Akron, 14-0, Tuesday in a rain-shortened game at the Zips' Lee Jackson Field. The Dukes were held to three hits by four Akron pitchers. This is the third time in the last four games (1-3) that Duquesne has managed exactly three hits.
Freshman Nolan Pena (1-2) led off the first with a single to right. Junior Steve Maiolo (1-2) started the second with a one-baser to left center. And freshman catcher Alex Sharick, who pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, got a one-out infield single in the seventh.
Akron (15-21) scored two in the first, five in the third, two in the fourth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh. UA smacked 17 hits off the Red and Blue pitchers; this included two doubles and a home run.
Redshirt freshman Joe Kaye picked up the loss, his second in five decisions.
The Dukes (13-23) are returning to Pittsburgh and will host Cleveland State (8-23) of the Horizon League on Wednesday, April 27th at 3:0 p.m. at Duquesne Field in Green Tree.
Note: Duquesne freshman center fielder Pat Kimutis's brother, Brian, is a junior infielder with the Zips. Brian was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
