April 24, 2005

Box Score

Arlington, Pa. - In the first two games of the Dukes' weekend series with GW, the teams split Saturday's doubleheader while scoring a total of seven runs. One team was able to break out despite Sunday's temperature in the mid-40s.

Duquesne University's baseball team dropped the getaway game of the weekend series with George Washington by a 10-2 score Sunday afternoon at Barcroft Park in the Virginia suburbs of our nation's capital. Junior Steve Maiolo, the Dukes' leading batter, went 3-for-3 with a stolen base while scoring the Dukes' final run. Freshman Bill Torre was 2-for-3 with a double and the other DU run.

DU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when freshman Aaron Janusey drove in Torre with a sacrifice fly. The host team responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs including a leadoff homer by Brad Rosenblat.

The Dukes got a run back in the fourth when Maoilo led off with a single and stole second, scoring on freshman Dante Plassio's double. That 3-2 score turned out to be the Dukes' last high point as GW's Josh Wilkie (3-3) allowed just one more hit in the next four innings. He struck out 10 in eight innings to get the win.

The Colonials put up two runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh and added a solo marker in their last at bat for the 10-2 margin. Junior Adam Haun (1-3), who gave up six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, was charged with the loss.

GW (25-13) upped their A-10 record to 7-5 while the Dukes (13-22) dropped to 8-7.

The Dukes next action is a non-conference matchup with the Mid-American Conference's Akron (14-21) at the Zips' Lee Jackson Field on Tuesday, April 26th at 3:00 p.m. Akron was rained out of their three-game series against Miami (Ohio) this weekend.
