Kent, Ohio - Duquesne University's baseball team was unable to hold onto a seven-run lead as Kent State scored nine runs in the last three innings to grab a 12-10 victory over the A-10 visitors at Schoonover Stadium on Tuesday. Junior Steve Maiolo led DU's offensive attack going 3-for-5 including a double while driving in four runs and scoring one. Maiolo raised his team-leading marks to 24 RBI and a .357 bating average.
Sophomore Alex Sharick also was 3-for-5 while sophomore Joe Berletic, freshmen Aaron Janusey, Eric Morrison and Bill Torre each had two hits. Berletic and Januasey drove in two runs each. The frosh hit his first home run as collegian, a sole drive to lead off the fifth innning.
Sophomore Alex Sharick gave up one hit, one walk and two runs, only one earned in 1 1/3 innings; he was charged with the loss. Tuesday's defeat, which snapped the Dukes' three-game winning, puts Duquesne's record to 12-19 while Kent State is now 21-14.
Duquesne put together 14 hits for 10 runs in the first seven innings, taking a 10-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Todd Balduf hit a game-tying three-run homer in the eighth inning and Gregg Hiller won the contest with a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth. While the Golden Flashes rallied for nine runs in their last three chances at bat, KSU pitchers held the Dukes to just one hit in the final two frames.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 20, 2005, the Dukes take on another Mid-American Conference team, Ohio U. (15-14), 3:00 p.m. at Duquesne Field in Pittsburgh's suburb, Green Tree. The Bobcats are hosting the A-10's Dayton Flyers this evening.
