Dukes Win Getaway Game At Liberty, 6-4

Lynchburg, Va. - Duquesne University's baseball team won the final game of a weekend series with Liberty, 6-4, on Sunday at Worthington Stadium to win their first 2005 3-game series and raise their early record to 2-4. Redshirt freshman Joe Kaye, who pitched two scoreless innings of relief, gained his first win as a Duke. True freshman Patrick Kimutis led the offensive attack with two extra base hits, a run scored and two RBI.

After four scoreless innings, Duquesne took a 4-0 lead in the top of the fifth on Kimutis' one-out two-RBI double. The Washington, Pa. frosh scored on a ground-out by another freshman, Bill Torre. Redshirt freshman Nolan Pena doubled, stole third and scored on an error by Flames pitcher Chris Kuvich.

The Red and Blue added two more runs in the top of the sixth to put DU up 6-0. Outfielder Nick Morrison, whose single drove in junior Steve Maiolo who doubled to start the inning, scored his second run of the day, this time on a wild pitch.

Liberty chipped away at Duquesne's lead in the bottom of the frame on David Bechtold's sacrifice fly that drove in Michael Just. LU dded another run in the seventh on Jeff Brown's sacrifice fly and two more in the eighth on Aaron Grijalva's two-run homer that tightened the score to 6-4.

The Flames loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but freshman Nick Jones pitched out of the jam for his first save. Liberty is now 8-3.

Duquesne returns to action on Tuesday, March 8th when they will host Youngstown State (8-3) in the Red and Blue's home opener. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. at Duquesne Field in Green Tree.
