Charlotte, North Carolina - Host Charlotte tallied 11 runs off Dukes' junior pitcher Scott Chisholme in the first three innings on their way to an 18-7 win over Duquesne at the 49ers' Phillips Field on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Bill Torre continued his hot batting, going 3-for-4 with an RBI this afternoon. The South Park, Pa. native is 7-for-8 in the last two games.
Fellow freshman Patrick Kimutis stroked two doubles, was a perfect 2-for-2, scored twice and drove in a run. He also walked twice. Junior Steve Maiolo powered a two-RBI home run while hitting 2-for-3 and scoring twice. Maiolo also received two passes via bases on balls. Sophomore Joe Berletic drove in two runs and scored once while going for 2-for-4. Fellow soph Alex Sharick also was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Chisholme is now 1-2.
After the Niners took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, the Dukes tallied two runs in the top of the second on Kimutis' first double and Torre's single that tied the game 2-2. Charlotte added four runs in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead to 6-2.
Duquesne tightened the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the third on Berletic's RBI double and Maiolo's two run homer, his first of the season. Charlotte sent Chisholme to the bench as they added five more runs in their next turn at the bat, extending the edge to 11-5. That was all the runs they would need.
DU added single runs in the fifth and sixth on singles by Bertletic (5th) and Sharick (6th).
Duquesne (2-6) and future Atlantic 10 foe Charlotte (13-3) complete this three-game weekend series on Sunday, March 13, 2005 with another noon start at Phillips Field.
