Box Score

Tuscaloosa, Alabama - Duquesne University's baseball team dropped their season opener Friday evening, 13-3, to Alabama at the Crimson Tide's Sewell-Thomas Stadium, also known as "The Joe." This was the first of a three-game weekend series with the SEC team.

The Dukes took a one-run lead in the second inning only to see Alabama score five in the third. DU wouldn't cross home plate again until the top of the ninth, putting two more on the board. Six of Alabama's 13 runs came off four Duquesne errors.

Junior infielder Steve Maiolo, one of the Red and Blue's three returning starters, went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Senior Bob Reifschneider was charged with the loss as he allowed four earned runs in four innings on the mound.

Alabama raised its season mark to 6-3 while the Dukes are 0-1.

Because of rain in the forecast, the second game of the series will begin an hour early, at 4:00 p.m. EST, instead of the original 5:00 p.m. start. A decision will be made Saturday morning on weather a double header will be played tomorrow.
