Duquesne's men's soccer team jumped to a 2-0 lead and held on for a 2-1 victory over Saint Joseph's Friday evening on Rooney Field in both teams' Atlantic 10 opener.
The Dukes struck in the 13th minute as junior Tom Sochacki tapped in a pass from senior Scott Gibson to give the Red and Blue a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Gibson tallied his team-leading fourth goal of the season off a pass across the goalmouth from freshman Evan Browne to give DU a 2-0 advantage.
Saint Joseph's ended junior goalkeeper Zach Varga's bid for the shutout as Jim Slover connected on a penalty kick in the 40th minute to end the day's scoring. Duquesne outhot the Hawks, 22-4 and contolled play for the majority of the game.
The Red and Blue return to action on Sunday as they host Temple at 1:00 pm.
