Oct. 30, 2005

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - Duquesne's nationally ranked men's soccer team recorded a 4-0 shutout over the George Washington Colonials Sunday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.

Four different Dukes scored. Junior Noah Salsi (North Huntingdon, PA / Norwin) had a goal and an assist and classmate Zach Varga (Mountville, PA / Hempfield) recorded his eighth shutout of the season and 21st of his career on the Bluff.

Duquesne, which has won seven out of the last eight contests, raised their Atlantic 10 record to 6-1-0. DU is 12-3-0 overall. GW is now 5-8-3, 2-5-1 in league play.

Sophomore Travis MacKenzie (Carnegie, PA / Chartiers Valley), who scored the game-winner in Friday's 1-0 win over La Salle, also had the GW Sunday. Junior Tom Sochacki (Pittsburgh, PA / Shady Side Academy) set up MacKenzie for a header in the 16th minute of play. The match was 1-0 at the break.

The Dukes broke the game open early in the second half when Salsi put DU ahead 2-0, lining a bullet from 35-yards out that slid off the fingertips of GW goalkeeper Greg Yahr with the clock reading 52:22. Eight minutes later, Salsi set up senior Steve Mellor (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) who made the score 3-0.

Duquesne added an insurance goal from senior Scott Gibson (New Carlin Howe, Redcar England) at the 85:34 mark when sophomore Greg Annan (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) dribbled in, drew Yahr out of the box and then tapped the ball to Gibson who hit the empty net.

Both teams got off 12 shots with Duquesne sending 10 of theirs on goal. Varga recorded five saves and Yahr stopped six of DU's targeted shots.

Duquesne, which entered the weekend ranked at number 20 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA)/adidas Top 25 national poll, concludes the regular season schedule next weekend with a 7:00 p.m. game Friday, November 4, 2005 at Richmond followed by a Sunday match at Charlotte at 1:00 p.m. on November 6th.
