Philadelphia, Pa. - The nationally-ranked Duquesne men's soccer team shut out the La Salle Explorers, 1-0, Friday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. Sophomore Travis MacKenzie (Carnegie, PA / Chartiers Valley) tallied the game-winner in the 28th minute of play while junior Zach Varga (Mountville, PA / Hempfield) recorded his seventh blanking of the season.
The Dukes broke the scoreless tie when sophomore Greg Annan's (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) throw-in found MacKenzie who chipped the ball into the far right corner of the net with 27:37 on the clock.
Varga recorded two saves on the way to his 20th career shutout. With his fourth goal, MacKenzie has now tied senior Steve Mellor (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) for the team lead with 11 points.
La Salle (6-8-3, 3-3-1 A-10) goalkeeper Andrew Bernhard made three saves. The Dukes outshot LSU, 11-10.
Duquesne (11-3-0, 5-1-0) entered the weekend 20th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's NSCAA/adidas Top 25 national poll and second in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic region. The Dukes next travel to Washington, D.C. for a 1:00 p.m. Sunday contest against George Washington (5-7-3, 2-4-1 A-10) at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
