Oct. 22, 2005

Box Score

Duquesne's men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to visiting Saint Louis, 3-2 in overtime Saturday evening on Rooney Field in a battle for first place in the Atlantic 10 standings. The game was played in front of a Duquesne record crowd of 529. The Dukes fall to 10-3-0 overall and 4-1-0 in A-10 play while the Billikens improve to 8-4-1 and 5-0-0.

In a spirited contest with cool, wet conditions, Saint Louis struck first in the 27th minute, scoring on a rebound after a save by DU keeper Zach Varga to go ahead, 1-0.

SLU would take the lead into halftime before the Dukes evened the score as sophomore Greg Annan headed in a goal off a corner kick from redshirt freshman Pat Flinn in the 62nd minute. The Billikens answered in the 78th minute to retain the lead, but the Dukes bounced back just minutes later as senior Steve Mellor found the net off an assist from sophomore Travis MacKenzie, sending the contest into overtime.

One minute and 23 seconds later, Saint Louis captured the victory on a direct kick.

The Dukes controlled play for most of the game, outshooting the Billikens, 14-6 and having a slight edge in corners, 3-1.

The Red and Blue return to action on Friday, Oct. 28 as they travel to La Salle for a 3:00 pm contest.
