Duquesne's 16th ranked (NSCAA) men's soccer team captured its fifth straight victory with a 1-0, double overtime triumph over visiting Rhode Island Sunday afternoon on Rooney Field. The Dukes improve to 10-2 on the season and 4-0 in Atlantic 10 play while URI falls to 5-7-1 and 1-2-0.
Sophomore Greg Annan scored the game-winning goal, his first of the season, off a direct kick in the 105th minute. From 25 yards out on the left side of the field, freshman John Strosser lofted the ball to the left side of the goal box where senior Steve Mellor headed it across the goal mouth to Annan who headed it in.
Junior keeper Zach Varga tallied his third straight shutout and sixth of the season to improve his goals against average to 0.58. He made three saves on the day, including a point blank shot late in the contest to give him 33 for the season.
The Red and Blue return to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 as they host Saint Louis at 6:00 pm in their home finale.
