George Washington hit its first seven shots of the game in jumping out to a 17-11 lead and was never threatened the rest of the way in a dominating 81-57 win over Duquesne at the Palumbo Center.
The Colonials, who came into the game ranked No. 24 by the Associated Press, played a near-perfect first half in building a 50-31 lead. T.J. Thompson scored 14 of his 17 points - including all four of his 3-point attempts - in the opening 20 minutes as GW hit 20-of-28 shots from the field. The Colonials threw down six of their nine dunks before intermission.
Duquesne, which was led by Bryant McAllister's 19 points, managed to cut the George Washington lead to 15 at 61-46 with 8:17 left before GW answered with an 18-6 run to erase any Dukes' comeback hopes.
Mike Hall led the Colonials with 19 points. J.R. Pinnock added 15. Carl Elliott finished with a game-high 11 assists and George Washington assisted on 26 of 30 field goals.
Kieron Achara was the only other Duquesne player to reach double digits with 12.
GW finished the game shooting 56.6 percent from the field, while Duquesne, which shot 4,5.5. percent, struggled from the 3-point arc hitting just 5-of-18 including 1-of-10 in the second half.
