June 8, 2004

Duquesne shortstop Dan Schwartzbauer (Glenshaw, PA / Shaler) was selected in the 2004 Major League Baseball draft by the hometown Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday. The Pirates picked Schwartzbauer in the 41st round of this year's draft.

The four-year starter for Coach Mike Wilson's Dukes becomes the third Duquesne baseball player to be drafted by the Buccos. Pitcher Joe Beimel, who spent the previous three years on the Pirates' MLB staff, was drafted in 1998 and outfielder B.J. Barns was picked in the 1999 MLB draft.

In his senior season, Schwartzbauer led the Dukes with 41 runs scored, was second with a .329 batting average and had a .404 on-base percentage as Duquesne's leadoff hitter. He also led DU, and was second in the Atlantic 10 Conference, with a perfect 22 stolen bases on 22 attempts. The Western Pennsylvania native was eighth in the league with 26 double plays and 10th with 112 assists. Schwartzbauer finished his career with a .296 batting average, 166 runs scored, 79 stolen bases and 44 walks.

Pirates scouing director Ed Creech said, "He's an acrobatic shortstop and we really like his defensive skills."

Pirrsburgh's rookie mini-camp starts Friday, June 11 at Pirates City in Bradenton, Fla.
