Dukes Split Doubleheader With Akron

The Duquesne University baseball team split a doubleheader Wednesday with visiting Akron at the Washington Wildthings' Falconi Field. The Dukes came from behind to win game one, 8-7 while the Zips held off the Dukes in game two, 3-2.

In game one, Dan Schwartzbauer was 3-4 with a run scored while Steve Maiolo was 2-3 with three RBI, including the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dave Knechtel picked up his first career save in relief of Mike Korzeniewski who got the win.

In the nightcap, the Dukes trailed 3-0 after two and a half innings before scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth frames, but would get no closer. Pete Maropis hit a solo home run while Bill Swart had a double and a sacrifice fly.

The Dukes return to action on Saturday, May 1 as they host Dayton in a noon Atlantic 10 doubleheader.
