Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

Richmond, Va. - The Duquesne baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Atlantic 10 foe Richmond Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field. The Dukes dropped the opener, 3-1, and then lost the second game of the day, 13-5. Sophomore Steve Maiolo led DU's offense in the DH with three RBI as he went 3-for-4 from the plate, stole a base and waited for two walks.

Redshirt senior Luke Taggart went 2-for-2 in the nightcap and redshirt freshman Corey Bugno hit a two-run homer, his first of the season. DU's designated hitter Joe Berletic, also a redshirt freshman, hit two doubles and drove in one and scored a run in the twin bill.

In the first contest, Richmond scored two runs in the third and another in the fifth before Maiolo drove in senior Dan Schwartzbauer, who had opened the sixth with a double. Sophomore Adam Haun (2-4), who gave up six hits, was charged with the loss. UR's Thomas Martin is now 4-1 on the season.

The Dukes got on the scoreboard in the second game on Maiolo's second RBI single of the day in the top of the first which drove in junior Mike Grecco who had reached base on an error. But the Spiders tallied seven runs in the bottom of the frame and three more in the second for an early 10-1 lead.

Berletic's double drove in senior Jonathan Kelly whose two-out single in the fourth started the Dukes' rally. Bugno's homer to right scored Berletic and brought the score to 10-4 only to see the Spiders put up three more runs in their turn at bat for a 13-4 lead. Maiolo's second hit of the day drove in senior Bill Swart in the seventh for the Dukes' final run and the 13-5 final score.

Sophomore Scott Chisholm (3-5) lasted just 1 2/3 innings and was hit for the loss. Freshman Matt Melillo and sophomore Bob Hartle each pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Richmond's Rob Berzinskas picked up his third win in four decisions.

Duquesne (12-18, 5-6 A-10) and Richmond (20-16, 8-3 A-10) conclude the weekend series with a 12:00 noon game on Sunday, April 25th at Pitt Field.
