Kingston, R.I. - Junior Bob Reifschneider's five-hit complete game 7-0 shutout catapulted Duquesne to their second Atlantic 10 win over Rhode Island Sunday at Bill Beck Field. The victory enabled DU to win this conference opening three-game series. Reifschneider (Lower Burrell, PA/Burrell) struck out seven on the way to his first victory of the season. Senior Jonathan Kelly (Pittsburgh, PA / Mt. Lebanon) was 2-for-4 and drove in four runs.
The Dukes, aided by seven Ram errors and though also held to five hits, were able to take advantage of their opportunities to build an unsurmountable edge.
Duquesne (8-9, 2-1 Atlantic 10) broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth when Kelly's double to center cleared the bases for a 3-0 lead. DU added an unearned run in the fifth and tacked on three more, again unearned, in the eighth. The last tally came on Kelly's single to left that scored senior Andy Gallina (Mt. Lebanon, PA / Central Catholic), increasing DU's edge to 7-0.
URI's Zach Zuercher, who gave up two earned runs and struck out 13 in 7 2/3 innings, was charged with the loss. Rhode Island is now 9-10-1, 1-2 in league play.
The Dukes return home for a non-conference game with Youngstown State on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at Duquesne Field in Green Tree.
