Columbia, South Carolina - Duquesne's baseball team got their first victory of the early 2004 season by defeating Radford 12-9, Sunday afternoon in their final game of the 2004 Gamecook Round Robin at the University of South Carolina's Sarge Frye Field. Down two runs, a six-run rally in the eighth powered DU to the win.
Seniors Dan Schwartzbauer and Pete Maropis homered and sophomore Bob Hartle pitched three innings of relief, allowing just one earned run, for his first collegiate win. Schwartzbauer knocked in a team best three RBI while sophomore Steve Mailo drove in two runs.
The Dukes (1-2) opened the scoring on Schwartzbauer's lead off home run in the top of the first off RU starter Tom Graham. DU added three runs in the top of the fourth. Maiolo's single to left drove in senior Pete Maropis and junior Mike Grecco and senior Jonathan Kelly's fielder's choice plated Maiolo for the 4-0 lead. Maropis led off the sixth with his first homer of the season to increase the lead to 5-0.
Radford (0-6) came back in the bottom of the fourth producing their first run on a walk, a stolen base, an infield out and finally, a single to center. The Highlanders got an extra chance after sophomore Adam Haun, who was DU's designated hitter in the first two games, struck out Kellen Wohlford for what could have been the third out only to see his third-strike wild pitch allow Wohlford to join two teammates on the bases. Matt Mantione's double cleared the bases to narrow DU's lead to 5-4.
Duquesne ground out a run in the seventh on an infield error with the bases loaded which pushed the lead to 6-4. But Radford took advantage of some sloppy play to gain their first lead in the bottom of the frame.
After two Duquesne errors and a bunt single loaded the bases, relief pitchers Ken Strader and Hartle walked in the next three Radford runs. The Highlanders scored their fourth of the inning on a Hartle wild pitch for RU's lead of 8-6.
Still, the Dukes had more runs on their bats. The Red and Blue tallied six markers in the top of eighth to regain the lead, 12-8. The big hit in that rally was Schwartzbauer's two-run double which drove in redshirt freshman Corey Bugno and Kelly.
Radford got one run in the eighth to cut their deficit to 12-9.
The Dukes head to Bradenton Florida next weekend for a nine-game spring training schedule starting with Bowling Green on Sunday, March 7 at 2:30 p.m. In addition to a Wed. March 10th game with the Pittsburgh Pirates "B" squad, the Dukes will also take on Holy Cross, IFPWU, Eastern Kentucky, Valparaiso, Vermont, Northern Illinois and Indiana.
