Candace Futrell Named A-10 Player of the Week

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Duquesne University senior shooting guard Candace Futrell is this week's Atlantic 10 Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Sunday. This is the third weekly citation for the Altoona, Pa. native who, entering this afternoon's game with George Washington, leads the league in scoring with a 21.5 points per game average.

This past week, Futrell averaged 26.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in leading Duquesne to wins over visiting La Salle last Sunday, Feb. 15, and at Dayton on Thursday, Feb. 19. The 5-10 guard recorded a game-high 28 points on 12-for-22 shooting in DU's 74-58 win over the Flyers. She also had a game-high 24 points in the 74-69 victory over La Salle and pulled down 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Overall, she shot .488 from the field.

Futrell moved into second place on Duquesne's all-time scoring list during last Sunday's game with the Explorers. She passed Darcie Vincent who tallied 1,538 points during her 1989-92 career. Futrell, who moved into Coach Dan Durkin's starting lineup in her sophomore season, currently has 1,585 points. She is second on the team with 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

The senior has been ranked each week among NCAA Division I scoring leaders throughout this season and entered this week 11th in Division I with a 21.3 ppg average. Futrell has been as high as fifth this year and has led the Atlantic 10 in scoring all season.

The All-America candidate is also 30th among NCAA leaders in three-point field goals made (2.5), leads DU with 62 this year and is tied for third in the Atlantic 10. She is first in career three-pointers made with 171 and this season's number stands third on the Duquesne single season list.
