Futrell Takes over No. 2 All-Time Scoring Spot

Scoring sensation Candace Futrell moved into the No. 2 spot on the Duquesne career scoring list with her 24 points vs. La Salle. The 5-10 guard needed just six points to bump Darcie Vincent (1989-92) down to third with her 1,538 markers. Next Game

Duquesne hosts George Washington in a 2:00 pm Atlantic 10 tip-off this Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Palumbo Center.

The Dukes' Last Game

In a back and forth game that featured 11 ties and 25 lead changes, the Duquesne Dukes were able to hold off the La Salle Explorers by a score of 74-69. Senior guard Candace Futrell scored five points in the last 27 seconds of the game to help lock the game up. Futrell's three pointer unlocked a tie game to make the score 72-69, and after a traveling violation by La Salle's Shaune McLaughlin, Futrell iced the game with two more points from the foul line. Futrell improved her Atlantic 10 leading scoring average by pouring in a game high 24 points. Her 11 rebounds was also a game high, making this game the fifth time this year that has recorded a double-double. Futrell also moved past 1992 graduate Darcie Vincent as Duquesne's second leading scorer of all time. Futrell's 1,557 points trails only 1998 graduate Korie Hlede's 2,631 points. LaSalle's balanced attack offensively made it tough for the Dukes to put the game away. Five Explorers scored in double figures led by guard Meghan Wilkinson's 16 points. Davineia Payne scored 13 points and Kat Foley, Monica Garrido-Sanz, and Atlantic 10 Rookie Of The Week Crista Ricketts each chipped in with 11 points. Duquesne's all-time assist leader Shiri Sharon had eight on the day to go along with her 12 points. Aiga Bautre and Nicole Sinclair also had double figures in points with Bautre scoring 11 and Sinclair scoring 10. The Dukes were quite accurate, shooting at a 46.6% (27-58) clip from the floor. The Explorers also shot well at 42.2% (27-64) from the field, but could not convert the critical baskets in the second half as they went 0-6 from the three-point line in the decisive period. Wilkinson's four three pointers in the first half were the only long-range shots that they made for the entire game. LaSalle's Crista Ricketts was able to tie the game at 58 apiece with 6:04 remaining in the game and, neither team was able to hold a lead of more than three points for the rest of the game until Futrell's free throws with nine seconds remaining. The lead changed hands four times and there were five ties in the last six minutes of the ball game.

The Last Time They Met

Shiri Sharon became the all time leading assist-getter in Duquesne history while leading the Dukes to a 75-59 victory over the Dayton flyers on Jan. 9 at the Palumbo Center. Sharon's 572 career assists eclipsed the mark set by Korie Hlede in 1998 of 570. Freshman Loui Hall had a career high 18 points and senior Candace Futrell led all scorers with 23. Stefanie Miller, a senior point guard, led Dayton's scoring with 19 points, playing all 40 minutes of the game. Freshman Jennifer Strong posted eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the losing effort. The win was the second consecutive conference victory for the Dukes, bringing their Atlantic 10 record to 2-1; they are 6-7 overall. Sharon had no assists in the first half and Atlantic 10 leading scorer Futrell (19.9) was held to just six points on 3-11 shooting. The pair had no trouble finding a rhythm in the second half as they came out and took over the game. The Flyers (2-12, 0-3) struggled to maintain the pace set by the Dukes. Sharon also contributed 13 points, seven rebounds, and five steals in the win. Sophomore Nicole Sinclair chipped in nine points and a team high 11 rebounds. A 7-0 run by the Dukes game the host a 7-2 edge early on, but the game would see two ties and six leads changes en route to a 24-23 Dayton edge. Down 15-19, the Flyers sparked a 9-2 scoring drive for a 24-21 lead at 1:47 before Futrell's lay-up at :02 to end the half. Duquesne held a 13-point edge midway through the second half on a 19-2 run before the Flyers got within an eight-point reach - 47-55 - with 6:09 ticking. They closed the gap to eight points twice in the final minute, but would not get closer. The Dukes held the Flyers to just 30.1% shooting during the game, while taking care to make better shot selections themselves in the second half of the game. The Dukes shot 51.7% in the second half. A big chunk of Hall's career high points came from the free throw line where she was perfect, hitting all nine of her attempts. Duquesne came up with nine steals during the contest and converted 11 Dayton turnovers into 10 points. The Flyers tried to fight back at the end of the game with their full court press causing the Dukes to turn the ball over 16 times leading to 21 Dayton points. The Dukes held a 51-42 advantage in rebounding.

All-America candidate Candace Futrell produced her sixth career game scoring 30 or more points with 30 vs. Cornell Jan. 20. She posted a career-best 36 tallies vs. Xavier Jan. 11; had her second of the season with 30 points vs. Siena Dec. 22 and poured in a game-best 32 points in the Dukes' loss to Kentucky at the USF odwalla Classic over Thanksgiving. Futrell owns a team- and A- 10 best 21.3 ppg average this year.
