Erin Trageser Paces Dukes in 3-1 Win

The Duquesne volleyball team evened its record to 14-14 overall, 6-6 in the Atlantic 10 with a 3-1 (30-21, 30-21, 23-30, 30-21) over visiting Fordham Saturday night at the Palumbo Center. Senior Erin Trageser led the match with 17 kills followed by Diana Wuebker and Amanda Haeg with 13 kills each. Four Dukes notched 11 digs to lead the team in Wuebker, Trageser, Stephanie Hopkins and Ashley Macko. Kristin Garnett led the offense with 45 assists. Jenni Gross played an excellent defensive match racking up nine blocks.

Jamee Stimsom led the Rams with 16 kills followed by Tasha Johnston and Cassie Sharp with 12 each. Sharp and Stephanie Frost each added 13 digs to lead Fordham.

Solid hitting led game one for DU paced by Wuebker who hit 4-0-5 as the squad posted a .357 (13-3-28) effort in the contest to the Rams .128 (14-9-39). Duquesne opened with a 5-1 lead before the Rams closed in to a 5-7 reach, but the Dukes out-scored the visitor 7-3 for a 14-8 lead. The Rams would not get closer than a five-point reach afterward.

DU posted another strong hitting effort in game two led once again by Wuebker who hit 6-0-7 (.857) to aid in a .263 (12-2-38) team effort. The Dukes held an 8-4 lead, but Fordham cut the contest to a 13-14 reach and kept it a one-point game until four-straight points gave Duquesne a 20-15 edge. The Rams got to within a 19-23 reach, but the Dukes took the match out-scoring them 7-2.

Fordham jumped to an 8-4 advantage in game three before seven tied and four lead changes. Duquesne edged out an 18-17 lead before three straight Fordham points gave the Rams a 20-18 edge. The Dukes twice got within a one-point reach with the last being 22-23. Duquesne lost its momentum in the final stretch and suffered a 23-30 loss. DU hit just. 063 (14-11-48) for the game.

After a 3-3 tie, the Dukes grabbed a 4-3 edge on a hitting error and Kristin Garnett served for 11-straight points as the Dukes racked up four kills, six block assists and took advantage for five Rams hitting errors for a 15-3 leads. Up 22-11, DU saw Fordham out-score them 7-1 for an 18-23 reach, but DU kills by Haeg and Trageser put the game out of reach for the 30-21 final.

The win put Duquesne a game ahead of Fordham and fourth place in the Atlantic 10 stands. The Dukes return to action next Friday as they host the A-10's top seed Dayton at 7:00 pm and second-seeded Xavier on Saturday.
