Duquesne University senior designated hitter Sean Wilson (Fox Chapel, PA/Fox Chapel) has been named to the Verizon Academic All-America Baseball First Team. Wilson, who led the Dukes in walks with 44 and was second in batting average at .345, was the only Atlantic 10 player named to either of the national first or second teams. An elementary education major with a 3.62 GPA, he was also third on the team in RBI with 32 and was fifth in doubles with seven. The Dukes finished the year with a 25-29 overall record and made their first ever appearance in the Atlantic 10 post-season tournament.
Wilson is the seventh Duquesne University student-athlete to be named to a Verizon National Team this academic year and the first to be named to the first team. It also marks the third time in the past four years that Duquesne has boasted a national first team honoree. Duquesne has had 20 student-athletes named to the various District 2 teams this season placing at least one student-athlete on each of the nine (9) Verizon teams to date - men's & women's soccer, women's volleyball, football and men's & women's basketball, baseball, men's at-large, women's at-large. Duquesne's total is the most of any University in District 2. To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve player and carry at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA.
