The game resumed with no outs in the top of eighth and pinch runner Steve Maiolo on first base. Maiolo replaced Pete Maropis who had singled in John Rieg with the tying run prior to darkness overtaking the home of the Norwich Navigators of the Eastern League. URI's Reid Willett relieved Dan Frederick and after walking Sean Wilson, was able to get out of the inning without any damage as the Dukes left runners on second and third.

Scott Chisholm took the mound in the bottom of the frame, relieving starter Adam Haun who had limited the Rams to two runs through seven innings. Chisholm started a double play that eliminated D.J. Burns who had been hit by one of the freshman's pitches. However Dan Batz walked, stole second and scored on an RBI double to left from Dan Hayden. Hayden was taken off the basepaths when he was thrown out at third by Chisholm on an attepted steal.

Willett retired Duquesne in order in the top of the ninth to record the victory, his seventh of the season. Chisholm ends his first year 2-1. URI continues play in the consolation bracket taking on #6 George Washington who were topped by #2 UMass 3-1 in the preceding game. Xavier (#5), who had topped Duquesne in the opener, upset number one seed Richmond, 2-1.

Duquesne ends the season with a 25-29, 15-9 A10 record. Rhode Island raised their 2003 mark to 26-25, 16-8 A10.
