Red and Blue Tops Akron in 12 Innings, 11-10

AKRON, OHIO - Duquesne's baseball team extended its winning streak to four games with an 11-10 win at Akron in 12 innings Tuesday night at Canal Park. The Dukes raised their record above .500 at 13-12 and remain atop the Atlantic 10 West Division with a 5-1 league record. Akron dropped to 8-12 overall (3-1 MAC).

In the top of the 12th inning, Luke Taggart reached first base on a single, stole second and advanced home on a couple of errors for the winning run. Taggert was 3-for-6 on the evening with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI. Travis Rife earned the win after pitching 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, raising his record to 2-1.

Duquesne broke a 6-all tie in the eighth with four runs off two Zips relievers. Shortstop Dan Schwartzbauer, who was 2-for-3 with four runs scored, two stolen bases and four RBI, had the big blow, a bases-loaded double that plated three Dukes.

Behind 10-6 entering the ninth with Akron down to its final out before tying the contest. Dan Swallie knocked in two runs with a double down the right field line. Doug Kruthaupt drove in Swallie with the tying run with a single up the middle one batter later.

Rife closed out the bottom of the 12th, even though two Zips reached base on walks, when Tom Linde flied out to Chad Williams in center.

The Dukes return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2 as they host Kent State (8-11) at 3:00 pm on Duquesne Field.
