PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA -- Duquesne's baseball team opened its Atlantic 10 schedule with a double-header sweep of Massachusetts on Saturday at Duquesne Field in Green Tree Borough.
In game one, the Red and Blue jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and held on to win, 6-4. Senior Jim Popp went the distance on the mound for DU as he improved to 3-2 on the season while senior Andy Gallina and junior Dan Schwartzbauer both hit home runs.
In game two, sophomore Bob Reifschneider also pitched a complete game in a 7-1 victory. The Dukes scored all seven runs in the fifth inning while UMass got its lone run in the seventh. Reifschneider (3-1) allowed just five hits while striking out four. Schwartzbauer, senior John Rieg and junior Randy Vulakovich each drove in two runs.
Gallina, a Pittsburgh Central Catholic alum, paced the Dukes this afternoon with four hits, including a double and his second home run of the season, three RBI and two runs scored as he upped his early season average from .211 to .273.
The Dukes improved their season record to 9-9, 2-0 A-10 while UMass is now 2-7, 0-2 A-10. Game three of the series will be played tomorrow at noon at Duquesne Field.
