The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Sunday that Duquesne's senior forward/center Beth Friday (Pittsburgh, PA / Upper St. Clair) is the league's Co-Player of the Week. Friday earned her second Player of the Week citation of the year for leading Duquesne to a 1-1 record on the week as she recorded back-to-back double-doubles.
In a 75-69 overtime win versus Xavier on Feb. 23, she had a team-high 23 points on 10-14 shooting from the field (71.4%) and a game-best 11 rebounds. She also added two blocks and two steals. Then in a 74-68 loss to George Washington on Feb. 27, she recorded her 49th career double-double with a team-high 21 points and a game-best 11 rebounds.
For the week, she averaged 22.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg, while shooting 59.4% (19-32) from the field. Prior to the GW game, Friday became only the second women's basketball player in Duquesne history to have her jersey number retired.
A 2002 first team All-Conference selection, last week Friday was tabbed a 2003 Verizon District II Academic All-American and is a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Academic pick. Entering today's A-10 TV contest at Massachusetts, Friday boasts 1,400 points (3rd all-time at Duquesne) and 1,148 rebounds (1st) for her career. She is also first in the Duquesne records books in career field goal percentages (.523), third with 144 blocks and tied for 5th with her 12.4 points per game average. Friday, who also holds the rebounding mark for each class, currently is the Dukes second leading scorer at 15.0 ppg and first with 10.8 rpg which is also the 12th best in the nation.
Friday shares this week's honors with UMass' Jen Butler. These two seniors form half of the Atlantic 10 Conference's roster of women's basketball players who have recorded both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
