Columbia, South Carolina - Duquesne's baseball team dropped its 2003 season opener, 12-2 at seventh-ranked South Carolina. The Dukes led 2-1 after two and a half innings, but a six-run third inning gave the Gamecocks a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Junior Dan Schwartzbauer led the Dukes with a 2-for-5 effort while scoring a run and stealing a base. Senior John Rieg and junior Pete Maropis had the teams lone RBI. Senior Jim Popp suffered his first loss of the season.

The Red and Blue (0-1) face the Gamecocks (6-1) again tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at USC's Sarge Frye Field.
