BRONX, NEW YORK - Duquesne's men's basketball team broke their string of losing games with a 74-65 win over the Fordham Rams (2-20, 1-10) Saturday afternoon at FU's Rose Hill Gym. Senior Kevin "Buzzy" Forney led the Dukes (8-16, 2-9) with 21 points on the way to breaking the 1,000 point mark for his career.
Junior Ron Dokes added 14 points and senior Brad Midgley 12, with 11 of those points coming in the second half. Junior Elijah Palmer completed DU's double digit scorers with 10 points and three blocked shots.
The win ended Duquesne's eight game losing streak which started after their 61-54 win over Temple at the Palumbo Center on January 8th. Fordham saw their skid extended to 10 games.
Forney, who was the Red and Blue 29th highest scorer with 996 points entering the game, hit the 1,000 mark on a free throw at the 4:07 mark in the opening stanza. He passed All-American Chuck Cooper (1,000 -- 1947-50) and Willie Ross (1,014 -- 1963-65) and is now in 27th place with 1,017 points. Forney shot 5-for-9 from the floor and hit 11 of 13 free throws, including five of six in the last 1:39 to help seal the win. This was the Philadelphia native's fifth 20-point game, which was one short of his career high of 22 points, and the 58th double digit game in his career.
Fordham was led by reserve John Blackgrove who tallied 20 points. Big man Glenn Batemon added 16 while the Rams leading scorer Michael Haynes was held to 10 points.
Duquesne returns home to Pittsburgh tonight and will take on Western Division foe George Washington (8-13, 2-8) on Wed. Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Palumbo Center. The Dukes will be looking to avenge a 68-58 loss to the Colonials suffered at the Smith Center on Feb. 1.
