BOWLING GREEN, OHIO -- Duquesne University's men's soccer team (#9 NSCAA Mid-Atlantic) captured the title of the Bowling Green Diadora Classic with a 3-0 victory over the host Falcons. With the win, the Dukes improve to 2-0-1 on the season.
After a scorless first half, Damien Pottinger (Scarborough, Ontario / Mother Theresa), who was named the tournament MVP, found the net twice for the Red and Blue giving him three for the tournament. He scored the first goal at the 58.46 mark on assists from John Bechke (Strongsville, OH / St. Ignatius) and Brian McNelis (Reading, PA / Exeter Twp.) and his second marker came at 86:55 on an assist from Dan Hartung (Reading, PA / Wilson).
In between these tallies, David Gingrich (Export, PA / Penn-Trafford) slammed home a goal off assists from Derek Mackenzie (Carnegie, PA/Chartiers Valley) and Pat Dillon (Longhorne, PA / Holy Ghost Prep) with 81:36 on the clock. Senior goalkeeper Terry McNelis (Reading, PA / Exeter Twp.) posted his second shutout of the season while saving four shots. McNelis, Pottinger, Hartung and Steve Olivarez (Pittsburgh, PA / Mt. Lebanon) were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Dukes return to action next weekend when they travel to Hamilton, NY, for the Colgate Invitational. The Dukes will the face Rider (0-1-0, 0-0-0 MAAC) on Friday, September 13th at 5:00 pm and then will take on the host Raiders (2-0-1, 0-0-0 Patriot League) at 7:00 pm on Saturday.
- Note: Colgate upset fellow A-10 member St. Bonaventure 1-0 in overtime Saturday in Hamilton. The Bonnies (2-1-0, 0-0-0 A10) went into the match ranked 12th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
