Second full season at Duquesne
Ashton Gibbs, a former standout guard for the University of Pittsburgh, is in his second full season as assistant director of operations. The Scotch Plains, N.J. native joined coach Dambrot’s staff halfway through the 2018-19 season.
Gibbs, who played on a pair of No. 1 seeded teams in helping Pitt to three NCAA tournament appearances between 2008-09 and 2011-12, finished his career eighth on the Panthers’ all-time scoring list with 1,748 points in 137 games. One of the top shooters in school history, Gibbs finished with a school record 297 career 3-pointers (.410). Pitt’s third all-time leading free throw shooter (.872), Gibbs scored in double digits 89 times, topping the 20-point mark on 33 occasions. A two-time Big East All-Academic Team member, Gibbs earned first team All-Big East and Associated Press honorable mention All-American honors as a junior in helping the Panthers to the 2010-11 regular season Big East Conference title.
Gibbs, who won a gold medal as a member of the United States’ U19 2009 FIBA World Championships team, also represented Team USA at the 2011 World University Games as an undergrad.
After completing his degree in communications in 2012, Gibbs embarked on an international career that included stops in Greece, Spain, Romania, Lebanon, Mexico, Slovenia, Dominican Republic, Belgium and Argentina between 2012 and 2018.
Gibbs attended Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, N.J. where he finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer. Ashton’s high school mark was eclipsed in ensuing seasons by his two younger brothers, Sterling and T.J. Sterling went on to play collegiately at Texas, Seton Hall and Connecticut and is currently competing overseas, while T.J. is a guard at Notre Dame.
Gibbs’ father, Temple, played football at Temple University. Â
Ashton has two children - Arielle and A.J. - and resides in Pittsburgh.
