Biography


As a Freshman (2021-22)
  • Played in all 30 games with a team-high 28 starts.
  • Averaged a team-high 32.2 minutes per game.
  • Led the team in scoring (12.7 ppg.) and assists (91/3.0 per game) and was second in steals (39/1.3 per game).
  • Earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors three times (11/15, 1/24 & 3/7).
  • Was just the fifth freshman in school history to lead the team in scoring.
  • His 381 points were the seventh-most ever by a DU freshman.
  • Scored in double digits 19 times with 20-point games vs. American (21), at Marshall (23), at UMass (21), at Fordham (20), at Davidson (20), at GW (25), La Salle (34) and Rhode Island (30 in A-10 tournament).
  • The eight 20-plus point games were a team high.
  • The 34-point game vs. La Salle tied the DU freshman scoring record set by Eric Williams Jr. vs. George Mason on Jan. 20, 2018. Spears scored 25 of the 34 in the second half.
  • Followed that with 30 points in the season finale vs. Rhode Island at the A-10 Championship, making him the first freshman in school history to post back-to-back 30-point games.
  • Was the first Duke since Mark Stevenson (1990) to post back-to-back 30-point games.
  • Posted five or more assists in a game seven times with a high of seven in the season opener vs. Rider and matched vs. Richmond.
  • Was named A-10 Rookie of the Week after averaging 15.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals in DU’s first two games vs. Rider and Hofstra.
  • Scored 16 of his 17 points in the second half vs. Hofstra.
  • Had 21 points, six assists and six steals vs. American. The six steals were one shy of the school record shared by six players.
  • Scored 23 points and added four assists and two steals at Marshall.
  • His foul line jumper with 3.6 seconds left helped DU snap a three-game losing streak with a 64-62 win over New Hampshire.
  • Had 21 points in front of friends and family in helping the Dukes to a 78-74 A-10-opening win at UMass.
  • Followed that with 20 points (8-of-12 from the field) at Fordham.
  • Added his second A-10 ROW honor (Jan. 24) after scoring 18 points and handing out six assists vs. St. Bonaventure. He helped hold A-10 Player of the Year candidate Kyle Lofton to three points on 1-of-7 shooting in that game.
  • Had 11 points, a career-high seven rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes at VCU.
  • Came off the bench after 22 consecutive season-opening starts to score a team-high 20 points at Davidson.
  • Scored 25 points in 52 minutes in the 3OT loss at GW and followed that with his 34-point outburst vs. La Salle in the regular-season finale to earn A-10 ROW honors for a third time.
  • Finished the year with 30 points, five assists and six rebounds in an A-10 Championship First Round loss to Rhode Island.

Before Duquesne
  • Played at Windsor (Conn.) High School before spending a prep year as a combo guard at Mt. Zion Prep (Lanham, Md.) where he averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists against an abbreviated national schedule in 2020-21.
  • Was a two-sport star at Windsor as a junior where he was a New Haven Register second team all-state pick as a defensive back in his one season on the gridiron (2019). He also saw action at receiver as a two-way player.
  • Earned a spot on the 2019 26-man Connecticut High School Coaches Association All-State Football Team.
  • Scored 41 points against eventual Division I state champion East Catholic in the Central Connecticut Conference title game as a junior when he averaged 27.5 ppg. and 9.5 assists per game in earning all-state and all Hartford Courant honors.

  • First name is Amir.
  • Originally attended Northwest Catholic, alma mater of former DU standout Aaron Jackson (2006-09), before transferring to Windsor prior to his junior year.
  • Missed his sophomore high school season while recovering from a serious left elbow injury suffered during a summer league game in Harlem, N.Y. The injury resulted in three surgeries followed by months of rehabilitation.
