RICHMOND, VIRGINIA - Duquesne University's men's and women's outdoor track and field teams put in a good showing Saturday in day one of the Atlantic 10 Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, VA. The women are in third place of nine teams and the men are in fourth in the eight-team competition.
Freshman Melissa Stewart won the discus throw with an NCAA-qualifying toss of 47.55 meters (156 feet 0 inches) - the mark needed for the NCAA regionals is 150 feet even. Stewart, this week's A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week, crushed her own Duquesne record today.
The Indiana, PA native set the school standard at the Akron Quadrangular on April 19, 2003 with a throw of 139 feet 7 inches. She broke her own score at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational one week ago with a toss of 143' 0.00" which qualifed her for the ECAC (141'1").
Yardon Brantley (Reading, PA / Reading Central Catholic), who was named to the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Football League All-Conference Second Team as a wide receiver, hit a high jump of 1.92 meters -- six feet, three and a half inches. He broke the previous school mark of 6 feet 1 inch set by sophomore Joe Winans (Pittsburgh, PA / Baldwin) in April 2002.
The competition continues Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m. All Atlantic 10 individual champions automatically qualify for NCAA Regional competition, scheduled for May 30-31.
