Pittsburgh, Pa. – Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Sam Coss of the Duquesne University men's soccer team was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week Monday. It marks his second weekly honor of the 2026 season, as he was also bestowed the
plaudit August 24, 2026.
In a
1-0 victory over Rhode Island (9/19) to open the conference slate, Coss tied a career high with six saves, including one at point-blank range in the closing minutes to help preserve the win. Coss originally set a career high with six saves in a 1-1 draw at Robert Morris (8/30).
The clean sheet was the fourth of the year for Coss, who has yet to allow a goal at Rooney Field this season. Coss is tied for the Atlantic 10 lead in shutouts with Alex Smith of Saint Joseph's, a total that is also tied for fifth in NCAA Division I. A total of 17 student-athletes across the country have logged four shutouts, with five clean sheets leading NCAA Division I by four goalkeepers.
Coss enters play this week leading the Atlantic 10 in both goals against average (0.33) and save percentage (.913), totals that rank second and third in NCAA Division I, respectively. Aris Taki of Columbia hasn't allowed a goal in three games to own the best goals against average (0.00) as well as the top save percentage (1.000) thanks to nine saves, while Alex Kron of UNC Wilmington sits just ahead of Coss in save percentage at .917 in five games.
The victory over the Rams gave head coach
Chase Brooks his 100th career victory at Duquesne. In 14 seasons leading the Dukes, he has compiled a record of 100-93-31 (.516) and in 16 years overall as a head coach has amassed a record of 122-99-40 (.544).
Duquesne opens a three-game homestand Tuesday by returning to non-conference play, traveling to Morgantown, W.Va., to
take on West Virginia at 7:00 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Stadium. The Dukes will also travel to Saint Louis (Sept. 26) and George Mason (Oct. 3) during their swing.
