Duquesne Falls in Non-Conference Finale

Red Flash earns four-set victory over Dukes

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Saint Francis Saturday at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in its final match of the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational. The Dukes finish non-conference play with an overall record of 8-3 (.727).
 
POINTS OF EMPHASIS
Despite producing a better attack percentage in the first set over the Red Flash, .265 to .185, the Dukes dropped the opener, 25-23. Junior middle blocker Jordan Robertson and senior outside hitter Carsyn Henschen each recorded two kills in a 5-2 run to give the Dukes an early 11-9 lead before a 6-1 rally from Saint Francis tied the set, 16-16. The Dukes and Red Flash traded points through the remainder of the set, as Alyssa Irwin capped the win for the Red Flash with a kill. DU evened the match at a set apiece after taking the second, 25-22. The Dukes recorded just six errors in the second set and didn't trail until SFU took a 20-19 lead. Out of a timeout, Duquesne went on a 6-3 run thanks to four kills, two of which came from Henschen, to earn the victory.
 
NO QUIT
Sophomore Emersen Schrom totaled 13 kills across the final two sets, including three during a 7-4 run in the third set which leveled the set at 20 points each. The Red Flash, however, responded with a 5-2 surge to win the third, 25-22.
 
DECIDING SET
In the fourth set, the Dukes took advantage of three attack errors as well as a kill from Schrom to take a 7-2 lead, but Saint Francis (5-6) used a 14-7 run to open up a 16-14 edge. Duquesne continued to battle, cutting the deficit to one point five times before finally knotting the score, 22-22. Schrom would give the Dukes a 24-23 lead with her 17th kill of the match and added another to tie the set, 25-25, but a pair of kills from Korrin Burns would help the Red Flash complete a 27-25 win in set four and a 3-1 victory in the match. Burns led all players with 29 kills on 61 attempts, notching 11 errors for a .295 attack percentage.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Duquesne featured three players with double digits in kills, including Schrom (18), Henschen (14) and Robertson (12) … Schrom also added seven digs … Junior setter Chloe Wilmot collected her sixth double-double of the year with 44 assists and 13 digs … Wilmot has reached the 40-assist plateau on six occasions this season …  Over her last three matches, Robertson owns 35 kills against just three errors in 57 total attempts for an attack percentage of .561 … Senior outside hitter Hanna Wilson finished with 11 digs, while senior libero Madison Grimm added nine … As a team Duquesne hit .279 compared to .297 for Saint Francis … The Dukes slipped to 3-2 (.600) this season in matches decided in four sets.
